Yeh...that's true I guess. It was short lived though...unlike good old DOS.
The actual ADS framework will be moved to SMS, but the PXE process will be
part of the enhancement to RIS. RIS will still be a pull process, and not
push/multicast. This is what was explained to us. But...it's early days, so
they may change their minds. The only issue is that you may need to spend
money on SMS to continue to use the framework you've now got in place for
the deployment of the next generation of OS's. This is not a big deal for
many organisations, but I just wanted to add this info to the thread for
Angela to consider.

You're right, it is a good piece of work, but knowing what I now know, I
wouldn't recommend it at this point in time for someone in Angela's
position who is just looking at starting to build an automated build
process.

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Jeremy,

Aye, hey ho - its IT - things move on. It was a nice bit of work from MS,
I
didn't expect it to remain outside of SMS for long. But my thoughts were
that what is core ADS now will move to be RIS and that fancy ADS
development
would move to SMS. I'd be interested to know if thatâ??s going to be the
case.

All the scripts are based around vbscript - couldn't see a major problem in
porting them across to something else.

Hi Andrew,

I'd love to have a read of that.

However, are you aware that ADS 1.1 is the final and last release? The ADS
team has been disbanded. Most have joint the SMS team, whilst others are
working on RIS. We spent a lot of time investigating and chatting to
Microsoft to understand the best way forward before making committments
(building scripts, documentation, etc) to use ADS. RIS is going to be made
much more modular. Currently we use a good old boot disk/image using DOS to
lay the foundations for the unattended build process. But this is no longer
supported for Vista/Longhorn and Windows 2003 64bit. So we have more or
less
decided that the way forward for our automated build process is to use RIS
with WinPE version 2.0. This will also be Vista/Longhorn and 64bit
compliant. For us, the advantage is that most of our existing scripts will
work under WinPE. And the ones that don't are easy to port. So the
redevelopment phase is not huge.

Sorry to rain on your parade :(

 Kind regards,

 Jeremy Saunders

Angela,

The team I'm working with has got a document/white paper that should be out
soon that demonstrates using Microsoft's ADS service to deploy & manage a
citrix server farm.

The process utilises the ADS functionality to allow admins to create a
server build that can be deployed for zdcs/wi/silo servers. The w2k3+sp1 &
MPS4 builds are all pretty much fully automated (some SSL relay components
require an administrator to add a server cert). The build scripts that
include a good deal of the tuning stuff that's in the public domain.

ADS is also utilised for application deployment & patch management. We've
utilised ads rather than IM as at present I don't think you can script an
IM
process :(

Its not 2 hours tho' - its more like 50 mins. I can look at putting some
extra sleep statements in if you like?

Subject: [THIN] Automating Citrix installations

Hi

Im looking at designing a new Citrix Presentation Server 4 farm and wish to
automate as much as possible. I was originally going to use Ghost but am
now looking at the following:

- Scripting the OS (Windows 2003 R2) - unattend.txt or equivalent
- Scripting Citrix Presentation Server 4
- Automate Installation Manager so it installs base applications on the new
server
- Server tweaks / customisations

Is this possible? I basically want a process where I can set and forget -
come back 2 hours later to a server that is ready to go. Im aiming for
total automation but I know its probably not possible. If I can automate
the OS + Citrix then I'll be happy. Id like a process I can give to any
technician and guarantee the same server config.

Are there any sites that assist with the scripting required to do this as I
cant script very well... Does anyone have any intelligent scripts they are
happy to share?

Any help appreciated

Thanks
