After the upgrade was complete I anticipated Voiceover, Apple’s screen reader program would begin speaking. However, this was not the case. I tried a series of key presses, finger gestures, and reboots to no avail. Voiceover was running but would not speak. I was becoming very frustrated. After speaking with Al Puzzuoli of the MSU RCPd on Saturday he called me back with a suggestion he had seen on Twitter. We thought this sounded somewhat far fetched but we found out differently. Apparently if you have used your iPhone with a braille display and set the status cell option to Left or Right Voiceover will crash. To prevent this from happening and causing you frustration do the following prior to performing the iOS 8 upgrade. 1. Go to Settings 2. Go to General 3. Go to Accessibility 4. Go to Voiceover, your phone should say “Voiceover on.” Double tap voiceover On to open up the voiceover menu. 5. Go down to Braille and open it. You will hear Voiceover say, “Bluetooth is turned off. Bluetooth is required to use a braille display. Would you like to turn on Bluetooth?” There are two buttons labeled no and yes. Double tap the No button. 6. Flick right five times until you hear Voiceover say, “Status cell off.: Your other choices are Left or Right. If either are highlighted double tap the highlighted item to go into Status cell options and change the selection to Off prior to performing the iOS 8 upgrade. Thanks to Al Puzzuoli and Twitter.
