Yesterday afternoon, April 16th I had two Hudsonian Godwits west of hwy 359 and north of hwy 529 in the Buller Road rice fields on the Katy prairie in Waller County. This is a very early date in my experience and I was surprised that e-bird did not challenge it. Other species in the rice fields included 35 Buff-breasted Sandpipers, several hundred Long-billed Dowitchers, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpiper, one Baird's Sandpiper, at least four Semipalmated Sandpiper, several Golden Plover and one Semipalmated Plover. Due to distance and the rice stand I probably identified less than half the birds present. 70 white pelicans were challenged by e-bird but a 3 year old Bald eagle was not. The eagle allowed me to count the pelicans and ducks which took flight when the eagle landed in the pond and then moved on. Water in the fields is very ephemeral and most fields were dry and birdless. A roost pond on Zadelsky Rd held 700 Blue-winged Teal, hundreds of Dowitchers and a few other species. This pond will likely hold water all spring and provide a roost for many sandpipers.
