Fred Collins requested help in observing Purple Martin roosts using NEXRAD weather radar. I decided that others might be interested as well so I am forwarding my instructions to the list. You need to adjust the Loop Duration so that it includes the time the roosts disperse at dawn. I sent Fred my instructions about 8:30 and 3 hours worked well at that time, but it might me 4 hours by now and will increase as the day goes on. Click on your nearest NEXRAD station on the map (my instructions were for the Houston/Galveston site). John C. In the far right hand column above the map showing the Nexrad stations you will see Loop Duration as one of the settings. Pull down the menu and click 3 hours (if you do it soon; if not adjust accordingly) and then click HGX on the map. The two major roosts I can see in the Houston area is one big one just NW of IAH and another somewhat smaller one just SW of the big one. I note that Beaumont also has a large roost. The roosts can be seen as expanding rings as the martins come off the roost and fan out in all directions to forage. On the bar of images across the top (the line of little squares that light up from left to right as the display runs through the 25 images there is a speed adjustment. Slow it down as much as possible to get a better look at the roost rings. Remember the 3 hour duration is only for the present time. John C.
