Good evening,
An apparent dark-morph Hook-billed Kite was observed today at Santa Ana NWR
along the Tour Loop near the intersection of Bobcat Trail. The bird was soaring
at 10:00 am and drifted slowly off to the north. The bird is undergoing a
substantial molt of its secondaries. I will post a few photos to TexBirds later
on this evening. Also present were two very vocal Gray Hawks in the vicinity of
the Tour Loop and Owl Trail (near old cemetery) and at least three (heard only)
Northern Beardless-Tyrannulets from Bobcat Trail to Vireo Trail (also along the
Tour Loop). A few migrating raptors were seen between 9:00 am-1:00 pm, but it
was the resident raptors that were the main attraction today.
Good birding!
