I had a Yellow-billed cuckoo land just outside my dinning room when I had my camera handy. I got some interesting close up pictures. https://picasaweb.google.com/104550265337470389424/YellowBilledCuckoo82813# I took some pictures of what is probably the same male Ruby-throated Hummingbird that I was calling an Orange-throated the other day because of the color of his gorget. These pictures were taken on a cloudy day with no direct sunlight. They show the expected color in the gorget. I can't be absolutely sure this is the same bird, but he is guarding the same feeder. https://picasaweb.google.com/104550265337470389424/RTHUSept42013# These pictures would make you think the color change is only the lighting instead of feather wear. I suppose you could argue that the gorget would look red even in bright sunlight if the feathers weren't worn. All my pictures showing the orange color have been taken in August and September.
