On second look at the site, one can get close to the canal on TXDOT public right-of-way. Dow has fenced off their property and be sure not to cross their fence. Yesterday the bird was seen north of the bridge along the canal. It could easily show up south of the bridge and there is a much larger parking space south of the bridge. You get there by turning left at the stop light (instead of right) on the Dow levee road. The Western Grebe was in a salt-water canal, not fresh. There is very little barge traffic these days, so it should not get disturbed often. There is a fresh water canal very close to site, but usually heavy overgrown with water hyacinth. The google co-ordinates for parking at the original sighting location are: 28Deg58min11.31sec N and 95Deg20min55.1sec W If it is not there, the first place to check is a large fresh water lake near Quintana on the storm levee. Take a right on the storm levee just before you get to the Intracoastal canal, continue to the large pond on the right. Do not park so that you block the nearby gate. This is an intra-plant levee road for Dow commercial traffic. Dow has been alerted to the situation and you're welcome, but don't wear out our welcome by blocking the gate. One should not walk down the levee to the canal. Bird from the road. Ron, tad and I are looking at it right now. The bird is in small body of water along fm 523 just south of the intersection with sh 332. If you are coming from lake Jackson take sh 332 towards surf side and turn right onto fm 523 at the bucees. The bird is in the second body of water on the right just before a stoplight. There's an entrance to the levee there with a gate but plenty of room to pull in and get a look.
