Ten parties of 34 birders and four feeder watchers took part in the Tyler CBC on Jan 4, and tallied a provisional total of 110 species, more than the 106 species 10-year average and 3 less than the previous highest total of 113 species. Although there was good diversity, the absolute numbers of many species were unusually low, examples being only 5 Northern Shovelers, 10 Green-winged Teal, 72 American Coots, 4 Forster's Terns, and only single Great Horned Owl, Red-headed Woodpecker and Blue-headed Vireo. A Crested Caracara was new for the count, and 4 hummingbirds were unprecedented, including 1 adult male Rufous Hummingbird, 2 Selasphorus species and 1 possible Archilochus species, probably a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Other notable finds were 4 Neotropic Cormorants, 1 Snow Goose, 2 Virginia Rails, 4 American Woodcocks, 1 Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, a Spotted Towhee, Red-shafted Northern Flicker and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler. White-winged Doves are finally becoming more widespread, with 9 birds seen by five different parties. Thanks to all the participants for helping out with the count and finding a lot of good birds.
