To bird or not to bird this morning. It was misty to start but I drove to the Mineola Nature Preserve. The place was very birdy. Highlight of the trip was a flyover Tricolored Heron the bird flew southeast I guess it is possible it was coming from nearby Lake Halbrook. Also a bit of a surprise were 2 Anhingas over the Sabine River and 1 Blue Grosbeak at the beaver pond. Off in the distance I heard a Red-headed Woodpecker. Warblers very active I had 8 Kentucky Warblers including one the popped up to sing on exposed limb. Numerous Prothonotary Warblers including 3 that were so busy chasing insects I think I could have picked one up. Also the place was covered with Yellow-breast Chats I counted 15 and gave up. Other Warblers: Northern Parula 4+, Yellow-throated Warbler-1, Black-and-White warbler-1, Louisania Waterthrush -4, Kentucky Warbler-8, Yellow-breast Chat-15, Common Yellowthroat-12. I was able to show a beginning birdert an Acadian Flycatcher and got a great look at a Yellow-throated Vireo On the his day this underbirded place was a delight Mineola Nature Preserve (PPW-E-069), Wood, US-TX May 31, 2014 7:30 AM - 12:30 PM Protocol: Traveling 8.0 mile(s) Comments: had a fly over Tricolored Heron, the place was very birdy. 53 species Wood Duck 1 Anhinga 2 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 1 Little Blue Heron 1 Tricolored Heron 1 one bird flying southeast over Tyler Highway Trail Cattle Egret 50 Green Heron 1 Black Vulture 1 Turkey Vulture 4 Red-shouldered Hawk 4 Mourning Dove 4 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 12 Barred Owl 3 Chimney Swift 6 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2 Red-headed Woodpecker 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 6 Downy Woodpecker 6 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Acadian Flycatcher 6 Eastern Phoebe 8 Great Crested Flycatcher 8 Scissor-tailed Flycatcher 1 White-eyed Vireo 12 Yellow-throated Vireo 4 Red-eyed Vireo 8 Blue Jay 4 American Crow 15 Purple Martin 2 Barn Swallow 12 Cliff Swallow 25 Carolina Chickadee 10 Tufted Titmouse 6 Carolina Wren 6 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 12 Eastern Bluebird 12 Northern Mockingbird 2 Louisiana Waterthrush 4 Black-and-white Warbler 1 Prothonotary Warbler 12 Kentucky Warbler 8 6 singing males split evenly between the Trail to the River and 1 popped into view.Three more on the Tyler Highway Trail, 2 calling birds likely females.
