I headed to Uvalde and Real counties early Friday, and in 1 1/2 days of birding guided or otherwise advised by the tireless Tripp Davenport I saw/heard a Townsend's Solitaire, Canyon Wren, Vesper Sparrow, Black-Capped Vireo, Golden-cheeked Warbler (4), Pine Siskins (50+), Zone-tailed Hawk, Lesser Goldfinch, Summer Tanager, Black-chinned Hummingbird, House Finch and other species which I can't list here because I am a lousy note-taker. We birded two ranches and forded streams, climbed hills and rock faces, bounced over rocks and generally had a fine time. I headed to South Padre Sunday and saw 12 warbler species including Blue-winged, two grosbeak, two buntings. two orioles and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Lincoln's Sparrow, Gray-cheeked Thrush and many Franklin's Gulls on the beach. I also saw visitors barging into shrubbery where passerines were resting and heard about some photographers firing flashes off Saturday at dusk at a Cerulean Warbler in disregard of birding etiquette, good manners and common sense rules we try to live by. You know who you are, and shame on you.
