Greetings All:
Here's
the sixth summary of my 2013 game.  While June may be the roughest month of
the year for birds in our region (I barely made 100 species) some decent rains
made for better herping than we have had thus far this year, butterflies have
picked up a bit, and mammals were a little easier to find.

This goal of this year's game is to see how many butterflies, amphibians,
reptiles, birds, and mammals I can see in my 'patch': a circle, with a
radius of 7.5 miles, centered on the intersection of Quaker Avenue and
34th Street in Lubbock, Texas.  All of Lubbock's in-town playas, the
entire run of the Canyon Lakes of Lubbock, and a lot of urban/suburban
parks are in my patch with some agricultural/prairie patches around the
periphery.  I don't quite get Buffalo Springs Lake or City Farms to the
east but I do get almost to Reese Center to the west.  I decided to set my
goals high - failure is definitely an
option: 50 species of butterfly, 5 species of amphibian, 10 species of
reptile, 250 species of bird, and 15 species of mammal by the end of
2013.

The sixth month saw visits to the Canyon Lakes and the in-town playas of
Lubbock .., and to some nicely flooded playas in the northwest corner of the
patch.   These playas and the stretch of river below the Canyon Lakes of
Lubbock were the best sites this month.

The following list includes all critters (37 butterfly, 6 amphibian, 17
reptile, 100 bird, 14 mammal species) seen in my patch during the
month.  By the end of June I was up to 45 species of butterfly, 6 species of
amphibian, 20
species of reptile, 238 species of bird (not a single species added during the
month), and 20 species of mammal in my
patch for the year.  I lack 5 species of butterfly and 12 species of bird to
meet the stated goals for the year.  Species that were new to the list for the
year are
indicated with an *.
