Greetings All:
This year's brass knuckle event: Yard Hewetson (Lubbock) versus Yard
Kostecke (Austin). The rules: anything that can be seen from the yards (no
restriction to directly overhead), heard birds subject to review and
agreement (particularly nocturnals), no eye gouging, and no birding below
the belt.
Hewetson advantages: almost no canopy cover - much better lines of sight -
more in the way of overhead waterfowl - better hummingbird diversity.
Kostecke advantages: lots of canopy - better potential for migrant
songbirds - better vireo/warbler diversity.
The two yard lists are of similar length but it took Yard Hewetson twice as
many years to build up that list.
Standings at the end of 1 January 2016. I lured Rich up to my place in
Lubbock and was, however briefly, ahead with 17 species to his 8-9.
Standings at the end of 5 January 2016. As soon as Rich got home he
rallied and was at 23 species to my 19. His best bird so far:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. My best bird so far: Lincoln's Sparrow.
I have no idea how this one will turn out.
