Hello, this is the San Antonio Audubon Society with our

June 13 recording of recent bird sightings and an update

on coming activities.

The San Antonio Audubon Society has been a birding, education,

and conservation club since 1954. We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7 PM and have a new meeting place at the First Tee, 915 E Mulberry at the south end of Brackenridge Park. The program for July 5 is member Ann Mallard's presentation about Crescent Bend Nature Park, her year-long project for photographing birds, and tips for taking pictures with a digital camera. Copies of Ann's Crescent Bend book will be available for sale. All are welcome of course., at no charge.





On Saturday, June 16, at 8 AM meet Metha Haggard at her ranch in south Bexar county. (210-822-3886) About 4 miles south of loop 1604, take exit to Shepherd Road. Go left over the interstate and another left on the northbound access road. Go 0.5 miles to the gate at 16290 where there is a cattle guard. The code number for the gate is 2020. Make sure the gate is closed after you enter. Proceed to the second cattle guard and go left to the house. Bring some food to share at the picnic lunch. The plan is to bird from the porch, walk a little, then sit on the porch and watch the birds while we share lunch.





On Thursday, June 21, meet leader Sandi Wheeler at the main parking lot for Aquarena Springs in San Marcos at 7:30 AM. Take I-35 north to exit 206. Turn left on Aquarena Springs Drive and go 0.9 mile to Aquarena Springs on your right. Lunch at a local restaurant. Sandi's number is 210-632-2812.



Tuesday, June 26, we are meeting leader Sandi Wheeler at the Crescent Bend Nature Park at 7:30AM. From San Antonio take I-10 east to FM 1518, exit and go north to Schafer Rd and the brown sign to the park. Turn right and go 3 miles to the park just before the Cibolo Creek crossing. Bring snacks and water. Lunch at a local restaurant.



Saturday, July 7, is our annual picnic held at the Judson Nature Trails next to the swimming pool in Alamo Heights. Meet at 6 and we will eat at 6:30 PM.

Bring some food to share and a chair if you like your own. Info at 342-2073.



Meet leader, Mike Creese, at the gate to the Calliham unit of the Choke Canyon State Park on Sunday, July 8, at 8 AM. Bring drinking water and lunch. Take I-37 south to Three Rivers. In town, take TX 72 west past the South Shore unit about 10 miles to the park road into the park. Be careful of the speed limits in town. Driving time around 2 hours. Mike's number is

The next Beginner's bird walk starts at the Judson Nature Trails near the Alamo Heights swimming pool on Viesca Street on Saturday, July 14.

Meet leader Georgina Schwartz at 7:30 AM. Note this early staring time for the summer. Directions: at the 5900 block on Broadway, turn west on Ogden Street and go to the stop sign at Greely St. Turn left one block and then right on Viesca and go to the parking lot on the left before the swimming pool. We have some binoculars to lend out, so bring a friend. Info at 210 342-2073.



There will be bird walks at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center beginning at 7:30 AM in June. The 4th Saturday is always at 8 AM. There is a new first Sunday trip in addition to the present 2nd Sunday, and the 2nd Tuesday and the 3rd Sunday, and the 4th Saturday. The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is open each Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 4. A small fee is charged since this place is now an Audubon Center. Just ring the buzzer and they will open the gate. Other hours are available by appointment. Just call the Center at

210-628-1639. The gate is on the left 0.7 mile south of loop 410

Moursund Blvd, exit #46.



.There is a bird walk on the third Saturday of each month at 9 AM at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. This is not a SAAS trip, but is usually very interesting. There is a fee for entrance to the garden.



Every one is welcome at our activities and you don't have to be a member to participate. If you would like more information or membership in our group, just leave your name and phone number after the beep and someone will return your call.
