It seems shorebird activity is definitely increasing. I drove over to the fish farm and sod farm off of STP west road in Matagorda County. One of the ponds was being drained and was loaded with peeps and waders including Roseate Spoonbills, White Ibis, White-faced Ibis, Wood Stork, American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt. There were over 100 each of Western Sandpiper and Least Sandpiper, many Stilt Sandpipers and Short-billed Dowitchers as well as a smattering of Pectoral Sandpipers, both Yellowlegs and one each Ruddy Turnstone, Semipalmated Plover and Spotted Sandpiper. (Note that if you go to the fish farm, please do not drive on the levees. They are very narrow and the farm owner is concerned about safety, liability and hampering his business. He said it is okay to bird from the county road or even walk on the levee. Again, the drained ponds will be the most productive.) The surprises came around the corner at the sod farm. There were 5 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 3 Bairds Sandpipers. Both seem to be early. One other note was a flock of 18 Orchard Oriole's feeding in the weeds along the berm of one of the fish farm ponds. It seems birds are definitely on the move south. Good birding!
