For some reason, extreme south Texas was quite birdy yesterday, despite the lack of migrants farther up the coast. The front pushed through here about 5 pm Wednesday, and I anticipated that most migrants had arrived over land well before and gone inland. But I was pleasantly surprised. South Padre Island was quite good. Best of the lot were a striking Bullock's Oriole, a Baltimore Oriole, a male Blackpoll Warbler, Red-eyed Vireos, and a calling Sedge Wren at the Convention Center, and a handsome Yellow-breasted Chat, Warbling Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, two Lesser Nighthawks and a Blue Grosbeak at Sheepshead. A Nashville Warbler displayed his ruficapilla (actually, fine lines on the crown), and Common Yellowthroats, Yellow Warblers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Wilson's Warbler and Black-throated Green Warblers showed well. Two male Painted Buntings splashed in the water feature at the Convention Center, and Indigo Buntings and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were everywhere. There were Chipping Sparrows, Clay-colored Sparrows and Lincoln's Sparrows as well.
