Swainson's Warbler was out in the open for excellent long views this morning on the last quarter mile of the tram road. Hooded Warbler was near or on the Ebony deck throughout the day. Black-and-white, Orange-crowned, Black-throated Green, Northern Parula and Common Yellowthroat complete the warbler list. Indigo Buntings have arrived and are particularly visible in the first bridge area. Early evening Broad-winged and Swainson's Hawks were moving over the park, as were our FOS Mississippi Kites. Around 300 Franklin's Gulls flew over the park around this time. Late morning we were viewing a few black specks in the distance - Black Vultures as it turned out - and realized there were 1000 or so hawks kettling up far past the vultures. The distance was too too great for ID. Hope someone closer got a look. Although I haven't spotted my FOS Yellow-billed Cuckoo, several of us heard one this evening, one was calling this morning, and a staff member tells me one was seen near the park entrance. Tomorrow should also be a great day. If you're tired of the crowds on SPI, visit Resaca for a change of pace. -- Sherry Wilson Resident Park Host Resaca de la Palma State Park 1000 New Carmen Road Brownsville, TX 78521 956-350-2920 Bird Walks every Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Butterfly Walks every Sunday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Night Hikes every Friday (must RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Thurs) - small fee Nature Tram Rides - Wednesday thru Sunday (Visitor Center closed Mon/Tues) http://www.facebook.com/resacadelapalma DIRECTIONS: The main entrance to Resaca de la Palma State Park is located on New Carmen Blvd. From Expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; shortly after the gravel hump in the road, turn left to enter the park. *Learn how you can help Texas State Parks:* http://bit.ly/sVdilb 69 species (+1 other taxa) Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 2 American Wigeon 2 Mottled Duck 2 Blue-winged Teal 27 Plain Chachalaca 11 Pied-billed Grebe 2 Great Egret 20 Snowy Egret 1 Little Blue Heron 3 Tricolored Heron 1 White Ibis 18 White-faced Ibis 6 Black Vulture 5 Turkey Vulture 8 Mississippi Kite 2 Broad-winged Hawk 20 Swainson's Hawk 8 Red-tailed Hawk 1 American Coot 4 Killdeer 1 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Solitary Sandpiper 2 Greater Yellowlegs 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 9 Laughing Gull 6 Franklin's Gull 300 White-winged Dove 3 Mourning Dove 7 Inca Dove 4 Common Ground-Dove 2 White-tipped Dove 13 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 4 Ladder-backed Woodpecker 2 Crested Caracara 1 Merlin 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 1 Great Kiskadee 13 Couch's Kingbird 9 Tropical/Couch's Kingbird 2 Scissor-tailed Flycatcher 37 White-eyed Vireo 5 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 1 Green Jay 18 Purple Martin 1 Tree Swallow 10 Barn Swallow 13 Cave Swallow 2 Black-crested Titmouse 3 Verdin 5 House Wren 3 Bewick's Wren 1 Carolina Wren 5 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Northern Mockingbird 10 Long-billed Thrasher 8 Black-and-white Warbler 2 Swainson's Warbler 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 3 Hooded Warbler 1 Northern Parula 1 Black-throated Green Warbler 2 Olive Sparrow 3 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Northern Cardinal 6 Indigo Bunting 4 Red-winged Blackbird 30 Great-tailed Grackle 8 Altamira Oriole 4 Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
