outdoors! One of the best sightings was a low-flying Caracara turning close over the tram. While there were few migrants - Chimney Swifts and swallows in the air, Indigo Buntings on the ground, with very few warblers or hawks - plenty of birds are busy with nesting. Bird walks will continue every Saturday through April. May through August Bird Walks will be the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the Month and Butterfly/Insect Walks will be the 1st and 3rd Sunday. Altamira Orioles are busy building nests throughout the park. In another week some should be ready for occupancy. The most visible nest at the moment is toward the end of the grasslands area along the tram road. From the road you can watch the weaving as it progresses. Kiskadees and Verdin already occupy their nests. Watch for returning Yellow-billed Cuckoos in the Sugar Hackberry trees. The Golden-fronted Woodpeckers nesting in the dead tree at Hunters Lane continue to pop in and out of their hole. Don't expect to find much water in the resaca, however. There are only small pools remaining in this area. This morning we found the Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers as well as Killdeer, but no peeps. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs are in the pool to the left of the South Mexican Olive Deck. -- Sherry Wilson Resident Park Host Resaca de la Palma State Park 1000 New Carmen Road Brownsville, TX 78521 956-350-2920 Bird Walks every Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. - every 1st & 3rd Saturday starting in May Butterfly Walks every Sunday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - every 1st & 3rd Saturday starting in May Night Hikes every Friday (must RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Thurs) - small fee Nature Tram Rides - Wednesday thru Sunday (Visitor Center closed Mon/Tues) http://www.facebook.com/resacadelapalma DIRECTIONS: The main entrance to Resaca de la Palma State Park is located on New Carmen Blvd. From Expressway 77/83, exit at Olmito, take FM 1732, follow for 2.5 miles; turn left at New Carmen Road; follow for 1.5 miles; shortly after the gravel hump in the road, turn left to enter the park. *Learn how you can help Texas State Parks:* http://bit.ly/sVdilb 54 species: American Wigeon 4 Blue-winged Teal 14 Plain Chachalaca 2 Pied-billed Grebe 2 American White Pelican 2 Great Egret 1 Snowy Egret 1 Cattle Egret 1 White Ibis 9 Black Vulture 6 Turkey Vulture 10 Osprey 1 Swainson's Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 American Coot 5 Killdeer 4 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Solitary Sandpiper 1 Greater Yellowlegs 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 11 White-winged Dove 2 Mourning Dove 5 Inca Dove 2 White-tipped Dove 4 Eastern Screech-Owl 1 Chimney Swift 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Buff-bellied Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker 5 Ladder-backed Woodpecker 1 Crested Caracara 1 Brown-crested Flycatcher 1 heard only Great Kiskadee 9 Couch's Kingbird 14 White-eyed Vireo 3 heard only Green Jay 13 Purple Martin 2 Barn Swallow 12 Cave Swallow 3 Black-crested Titmouse 3 Verdin 2 Carolina Wren 2 heard only Northern Mockingbird 10 Long-billed Thrasher 5 Common Yellowthroat 1 heard only Northern Parula 1 Olive Sparrow 2 Swamp Sparrow 1 Northern Cardinal 6 Indigo Bunting 7 Red-winged Blackbird 28 Great-tailed Grackle 30 Altamira Oriole 6 Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
