Rather brutal weather for birding early this morning along the coast with
strong winds and Galveston recording 4.01 inches of rain. That said there
were still some good birds out there if you happened to be feeling
waterproof and wind resistant, or perhaps to non-birders slightly crazy
would be a better description. Plenty of the usual suspects around. Short
list of highlights is below:
Northern Gannet - 3 Surfside Beach, in pretty close right after the rain
diminished. 1 adult and 2 younger birds.
Common Loon - 2 Galveston
Horned Grebe - 1 Levees north of Quintana
Eared Grebe - 8 Levees north of Quintana
Great Black-backed Gull - 1 still hanging around the Quintana Jetty
Bonaparte's Gull - 12 Surfside Beach
Peregrine Falcon - 1 with a shorebird for lunch in Galveston
Golden Crowned Kinglet - 6 San Luis Pass Nature Trail

Duck tallies for the day:
Mottled Duck ~ 40
Gadwall ~ 350
Northern Pintail - 20
American Wigeon - 50
Northern Shoveler - 25
Blue Winged Teal - 4
Green Winged Teal ~ 30
Redhead - 185
Lesser Scaup - 42
Bufflehead - 16
Red Breasted Merganser - 12
Ruddy Duck ~ 300

Good Birding,

John Tharp
