Howdy Texbirders, My run to the Panhandle has been fun with many nifty birds. The area around McGee Lake, northeast of Amarillo, Randall County, produced huge flocks of Horned Larks with a nice mixture of longspurs. The Lake Meredith area, Hutchinson County portion, had a few Am. Tree Sparrows mixed in with big flocks of White-crowned Sparrows. I found one in Spring Canyon and two near the lake at the left fork of Sanford Yake Road (after entering the NRA). Near the water tower at Fritch Fortress there was a very cooperative N. Shrike (cooperative because I got pix). Fewer ducks on the deeper/dam end of the lake than there was when I was there last year. The upper end of the lake was loaded with waterfowl and gulls..way off. Only two C. Loons found. Also, large flocks of Dark-eyed Juncos. The grain storage elevators at Gruver, Hansford County, had over 500 Eurasian Collared-Doves present (yeow) with one White-winged Dove and about 30 Mourning Doves. North of Gruver, I had two Prairie Falcons and three Ferruginous Hawks (so fine). As you have probably figured, I was searching the north country for one of the Texas "Holy Grail" birds and it's still somewhere out there, acting like a Magpie. But, I still have tomorrow! Hope springs eternal. Tomorrow should be a nice day (today was mild and clear), but Sunday the thermometer drops and the winds pick up. I still have to kick a R-necked Pheasant out of the grass. A pheasant would be a nice late Christmas present. A pleasant pheasant present. Regards to all, Dennis Dalhart Dallam County -- W.
