Texbirders, Shelia Hargis and I participated in the Palestine CBC yesterday. It was our first time on this CBC that was begun in the 1980's. The habitat is largely rural residential and range-land so we spent most of our day car-birding which we have a great time with. Highlights of the 66-species day for us were Harris's Sparrows in multiple locations, Fox Sparrows in two locations. a Crested Caracara (unusual for this location), both Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, and (conservatively) 260 Northern Cardinals. Seriously, we were tallying 20 and 25 Northern Cardinals at our stops! We appreciate the efforts of the CBC compiler Ann Huffstetter for getting us up to speed on the count circle and helping us get started for the day.
