Texbirds:
W STP Road in Matagorda County was the place to be this morning. Near the
school bus foraging in a flock of a Yellow-rumpeds was a Nashville Warbler; no
other February eBird records for this species in Matagorda County. Also, about
200 yards north of the school bus was a troupe of 10 calling Groove-billed
Anis! Very impressive. Between the Saha Fish Farm and FM 521 were 8 Bald
Eagles; mostly immatures. Always a treat.
Fred Collins (correctly) recently declared Spring had arrived. Here are some
recent local miscellaneous signs to support that proclamation:
- Duck, goose and crane flocks have significantly thinned. Speculate that
birds are starting to move north.
- Over the last week, there were three separate flocks of over 100 White Ibis
moving north along the coast
- Laughing Gulls are starting to sport black hoods typical of breeding plumage.
- Mockingbirds have started their nocturnal chorus. (Fortunately, they are not
singing right outside of our window as in previous years)
- Azaleas, Indian Paintbrushes and even Bluebonnets have started blooming.
- Moving north along the Hwy 35 corridor are increasing numbers of 'snowbirds'
:-)
Enjoy the wonderful weather. Good birding!
