Greetings All: I spent most of the morning chasing critters at several Lubbock area hotspots. A quick drive around Lake Six kicked out 25 species including 2 Cackling Geese, 1 Canada Goose, 1 Great Egret, 1 Snowy Egret, 2 Gadwalls, 2 Common Gallinules, 1 Black-necked Stilt, 4 Spotted Sandpipers, 2 Northern Rough-winged Swallows, and 5 Chipping Sparrows. The riparian area below Lake Six was surprisingly slow (not a single Yellow Warbler or Wilson's Warbler to be had) but highlights included an absolutely stunning adult Tricolored Heron, 2 Cattle Egrets, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 1 House Wren, 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 1 Swainson's Thrush, 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Yellow-breasted Chat, and 1 Orchard Oriole. A quick cruise along a portion of Ransom Lake's shoreline kicked out 13 Canada Geese, 1 Snowy Egret, 15 Ruddy Ducks, 2 Franklin's Gulls, 2 Ring-billed Gulls, 28 Chipping Sparrows, and 5 Clay-colored Sparrows. The chapel/bird sanctuary at Ransom Lake actually had some migrants and tasty summer residents and, amongst the 46 species tallied in this beautiful stretch of riparian woodland, I noted 1 Warbling Vireo, 1 Canyon Wren, 2 House Wrens, 1 Swainson's Thrush, 1 Gray Catbird, 2 Curve-billed Thrashers, 2 Brown Thrasher, 1 Northern Waterthrush, 1 Common Yellowthroat, 1 American Redstart, 2 Yellow Warblers, 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 2 MacGillivray's Warblers, 4 Wilson's Warblers, 1 Canyon Towhee, 5 Chipping Sparrows, 1 Orchard Oriole, 2 Lesser Goldfinches, and 3 American Goldfinches. The closest thing to stunning seen during the day was the Tricolored Heron but it was nice to have a vireo and some warblers about.
