This morning I spent a bit more than 3 hours in the Colorado River Nature Preserve and tallied 45 species. Highlights were: Swallows - Cliff (lots - I estimated about 150 in sight at once around the bridges), Bank, Purple Martin, and Barn Warblers - Orange-crowned, Nashville (2), Yellow-breasted Chat, Redstart, and Black-throated Green Clay-colored Sparrows (3) 2 Singing Summer Tanagers Baltimore Oriole (1) Vireos - White-eyed (2), Yellow-throated, Blue-headed, and Red-eyed Flycatchers - 2 Great Crested, 1 Olive-sided, 1 Yellow-bellied, and 2 Empidonax sp. Hummingbirds - 1 each of Black-chinned and Ruby-throated The Yellow-bellied Flycatcher deserves a note, I think. I tried to get a picture, but put first effort into identifying and failed at the picture. However, this is one Empidonax I'm pretty confident of both on the basis of appearance and behavior. The olive-yellow color was very evident and any other flycatchers with that sort of coloration should be well west of us in Austin. Also, it was foraging very low to the ground and fairly deep into the woods rather than at the edge.
