The local patch challenge I proposed on January 1 is off and running, 75 people have joined the Facebook group set up for it, with many people posting images of their patch on the group. If you check the patch totals on eBird you can see many Local Patch Challenge patches there, with Stennie Meadours in the lead there with 67 in just the first full day of the Challenge. I would suspect some patches for those who don't have a day job will top 100 today or tomorrow. If you missed my initial post the Challenge is to see how many species you can find close to home in and 7.5 mile radius circle centered on your home. If you have a second "residence" you can do either or both. The idea is to find good birds close by without burning a take of gas. The only hard fast rule is to center your circle on your "residence" or "residence(s)". Many are finding how many good birding locations are with in the 7.5 mile circle. The Facebook group is located at http://www.facebook.com/groups/247047528758661/ If you go to the files section with have documents on how to set up a "patch" in eBird do it does the work of tallying for you, and a document with a couple of methods of mapping your circle.
