CBC will be conducted on Monday, 21 December weather permitting.
The Kenedy County CBC is one of those special CBCs that is not designed for
species diversity, but for surveying some of the most productive wetland
habitats for birds in Texas. The count is positioned to contain the 9-mile
hole which is at the southern end of the Upper Laguna Madre. It not only
contains this highly productive wetland, but also has 15 miles of extensive
grasslands behind the dunes and 12 miles of beach within the count circle.
During good years we expect to count over 100,000 shorebirds and 40,000 ducks.
The Padre island National Seashore needs help from birders to cover their
sections.
The CBC starts roughly 15 miles south of the beginning of the beach access road.
A birder is needed to accompany PINS staff to survey birds on the beach, and
scope the Gulf and behind the dunes.
A birder is needed to accompany PINS staff on an UTV to bird extensive
grasslands behind the dunes.
A birder is needed to accompany PINS staff to scope shorebirds along the
eastern edge of the wind tidal flats on the Laguna Madre.
