Hi Texbirders,
Yesterday afternoon, Sat Oct 15, there was a first-cycle Great Black-backed
Gull on the gulf beach about 100 yards east of the bollards at Bolivar Flats
Shorebird Sanctuary. He was alternately feeding from a giant fish carcass near
the water's edge, or chillin' with his homey crowd of hundres of other gulls,
terns and skimmers. He is hard to miss - larger than any of the adult or juvie
Herring Gulls out there, with a massive black bill, and specled black and white
"salt and pepper" upperparts. When he flies or spreads his wings, also look for
the black trailing edge of the upperwing (without a corresponding dark covert
bar) and for the white base of the uppertail which contrasts strongly with the
blackish on the rest of the back.
Photos will be posted when I return home.
Good birding ya'll,
Byron Stone, Austin
