I decided to see what kind of damage I could do to my Crosby County list in
just an afternoon with no time at/near White River Lake so I spent close to
five hours wandering about the northern half of the county.
Highlights included 110 Greater White-fronted Geese east of Crosbyton, 280
Snow Geese east of Crosbyton, 26 Ross's Geese east of Crosbyton, 2
Canvasback near Ralls, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant near Cone, 1 Sora at Silver
Falls Rest Area, 2 Wilson's Snipes in Crosbyton, 1 Greater Yellowlegs near
Cone, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs at Crosbyton City Park (*photographs*), 1
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at FM 2951 x White River, 1 Downy Woodpecker at FM
2951 x White River, 1 Merlin near Cone, 1 Eastern Phoebe at Silver Falls
Rest Area, 3 Common Ravens in Rio Blanca Canyon, 1 Brown Creeper at Silver
Falls Rest Area, 2 Rock Wrens at the FM 193 x FM 651 canyon crossing, 2
Canyon Wrens at Silver Falls Rest Area, 1 Carolina Wren at FM 2591 x White
River, 2 female and 3 male Mountain Bluebirds at FM 2591 x White River, 1
male Common Yellowthroat at Silver Falls Rest Area, and 1 Fox Sparrow at
Silver Falls Rest Area.
All in all, I racked up 77 species of birds - in less than five hours -
without taking recourse to White River Lake.
