There was a notably early Red Knot on the mudflats on the south side of Hwy 4 at Boca Chica NWR this morning. Even more of a surprise, to me at least, was that it was in non-breeding plumage. Perhaps a second year? Other birds along Hwy 4 included an early Piping Plover and a pair of Aplomado Falcons (the female with bands on each leg, the male unbanded).
