Today was a birders day out in the area with hundreds of birders out and about. One result was the scouring of shorebirds from the beaches by caravans of vans etc. Many of the avocets and other shorebirds were over along the Port Bolivar loop north of the old store. They were trading back and forth to Bolivar. Most in high breeding plumage. I spent a good bit of time trying to find land migrants in Port Bolivar and Crystal Beach with a total of 1 each of the orioles. 5 golden plover still in back of Cobb Realty. High Island had people with cars parked out to the motel from Smith Oaks. A black billed cuckoo was in front of the gate. Most warblers were up at west end of Smith Oaks from Don's drip down the hill to the bottom. I added a few like cerulean golden-winged to yesterday's list. In fact golden-winged was perhaps the commonest bird and singing a lot. The ruff was still at Skillern and seen by many. Hawks were scarce but it was unclear if they had gone or been annoyed enough to leave the road. Several swainson's on Pear Orchard plus a red-tail there. One of the pale krider's was still along the main anahuac entrance road and an adult white-tailed hawk was a mile east of the culvert just past the houses east of the t-intersection of 562 and 1985. Many of the brewer's blackbirds were still at the southwest corner of the intersection of Fairview road and 562 out in the dead grass. Some were further out but probably 100 are still there. A couple of odd birds were likely sub-adult red-wings but there was a good mix of birds today. No enforcement of the kennedy rule today. -- Joseph C.
