Why bury the lead? A great time was had by all (at least I hope) in Houston last weekend during the Winter, 2013 Meeting of the Texas Ornithological Society (TOS). Thanks to gorgeous weather, a tremendous group of volunteers, and accommodating birds, 198 participants encountered about 204 species of wintering birds in the areas around west Houston. Attwater's Prairie Chicken, Prairie Falcon, Long-tailed Duck, a Harris County Pacific Loon, Broad-billed Hummingbird, and the continuing Bear Creek Park Greater Pewee were highlights by any standard. The Marriott Energy Corridor's great facilities and staff made things easy and classy. The 27 trip leaders and liaisons got birders on birds on 29 field trips. The 16 workshop/Insight presenters informed and entertained. Lastly, but not leastly, Ted Floyd delivered an insightful, thought-provoking keynote address that included both Common Grackles and epistemology! Particular thanks go to Betty Vermeire, who handled registration, Teri Zambon, who handled the very successful Photography Silent Auction (which raised over $1000), and Bernice Hotman, who wrangled Ted Floyd (he can be slippery!). Strike while the iron is hot and clear your calendar for April 18-20th in Laredo! Jim Hailey will take over the reins as TOS President, and I'll smile and wave a lot. Thanks for coming to Houston! See you in the Spring!
