Spent a great day birding along the coast today. Started with White Park and then on to Anahuac in the morning and then spent the afternoon wandering around High Island, mostly Smith Oaks.Figure it was going to be a good day when I already had 8 warbler species before I got to High Island. Smith Oaks was definitely the hot spot today, managed 18 warbler species in an hour when I first walked in. Numbers of individual birds was also quite good. The afternoon drop in was rather apparent with the arrival of many redstarts, common yellowthroats, etc, etc. Noteworthy was an extremely late Sandhill Crane in a field at the intersection of FM 1985 and S. Pear Orchard Road. The bird appeared to be healthy and was mostly into summer plumage. Not sure why it's still down in this area. Other than a bird that may not have been healthy and spent a summer on Galveston Island I can't find any later spring records at quick glance. Highlights by location: White Park: Red-headed Woodpecker - 3 Magnolia Warbler - 1 Anahuac NWR: Sora - 8 King Rail - 6 Least Bittern - 2 Purple Gallinule - 4 Good shorebird numbers in appropriate habitat. Common Nighthawk - 5 Dickcissel - 30 The Willow's was very birdy with 5 warbler species, orioles, tanagers, etc. Searched the area SW of Winnie for any good shorebird habitat but came up empty. Looks like there may be some W of Winnie and north of I-10. Will investigate tomorrow if I have time.
