Rex's grasspiper post got me over to Cameron County this morning to look for shorebirds. However I was a day late and a dollar short with only four Upland Sandpipers at the Progresso Sod Farms and a few Pectoral Sandpipers and American Golden-Plovers at the Weaver Rd sod farm. But all was not lost. As I stumbled around looking for the north entrance to Weaver Rd, I accidentally wound up on the north shore of normally unproductive Adams Gardens Reservoir. The water was the lowest I've seen in many years with vast mud flats teaming with shorebirds. There were some shorebirds on the north side but most were on the south side, so rather than drive around the dike (which may not be possible) I opted for taking Weaver Rd south past the sod farm, turning right on the first road that goes over to Cannon Rd and then back north. Cannon Road goes to the south shore of the reservoir but the only entrance at the SW corner was cabled off so I walked up onto the dike and scoped from there. The birds were 100+ yards away so a scope is neccessary. My numbers are rough estimates which are most likely low.
