If the HOT drive was marginal for the gain of the transistor, there could be ringing at the collector which could cause problems with the picture. But you should be able to see the ringing with an oscilloscope. Not a good idea to connect a scope probe to the HOT collector unless the probe is rated for 1000 volts. A lot of the probes are only rated for 500 volts. The probe could be damaged and the scope input could be damaged too.
