Is there any one that can tell me why the prices of TV's, Vcr's and stereo sound equipment has dropped? I myself started in radio in 1945, maybe I'm the oldest of this group, since that time imagine all the knowledge I've had to acquire. Little by little the prices go up and up, some times not as much. Rent, licenses, electricity, insurance, phone, water, waste collection, gas, salaries, monitoring-alarm, and cable bills increase considerably the cost of overhead. But the prices of the devices we repair go down, down, down. Nowadays we're between the sword and the wall. fix it cheap or I'll buy a new one!. The result is we don't collect sufficient money for all these expenses, and don't earn enough profit for us. In the end the business of TV repair will disappear Pete Perdomo TV Inc. The way I see it is the TV repair industry has give all of you a good living, paid the bills and the privilege of been only answerable to yourselves. I say if you want to succeed bad enough, you will survive and probly do well. We know it's hard work building up a business, but it's only when you lose your ambitions and turn it into a routine that YOUR BUSINESS turns into a job. You have to keep reaching ever higher until, you have employees that do the work for you, and you then have time to look back at what you have. Just go for it ...The sky's the limit if you have the right attitude. If the rug gets pulled out, we'll move to alarm tech, computer tech, medical electronics, or industrial electronics. Some of us may go back to school to become engineers, architects, or maybe connect up to the local factories in some maintenance based field. We don't know what our futures hold, I just know that it is my God's hands....and I don't worry because of that ONE FACT! I'm 40 and wish I would have gone a different direction earlier. In college (back in 1981) we were even warned not to get into consumer electronics, but at that time there was a major recession and the only job I could get was at a TV repair shop. I eventually opted to work for myself because none of the bosses I had, thought I was fast enough to make them any money. Now with prices coming down so low that people replace rather than repair AND also the manufacturers are making parts and service info almost impossible to aquire, I can see myself wanting to get out of this field sometime soon. Looking ahead, I can see $129.00 plasma TVs hanging on the wall and I imagine if there is anything inside to repair, it would be on a module basis, so how many people are gonna want to repair? Already many DVD players are exchange only under warranty and no parts available otherwise, so what is the point in all this? I'm trying to figure out what I want to do instead, but I have no answer, and I don't want to go back to school.
