The mirror also might make it easier to mount the lightbox to get good
keystone and top/bottom focus.

Absolutely!  You don't need the mirror.  If the picture is upside down just
reverse the yoke windings.  Unless of course you want to mount it in the
attic shooting down through the ceiling and mount a mirror under it to keep
the ugly thing out of your living room!
