Bill, Thanks for the upgrade information pertaining to this model. I removed the cassette tray and checked the gears, levers, etc., and it all seems OK. I decided to remove and give the mode switch a good cleaning, that was the fix, now everything is back to normal. Again thanks. If they're white you need the upgrade kit I don't have the p/n for that I'm at home today. Sounds like rack gear may be sliding over carriage drive gear instead of engaging it and as it unloads it binds. But also check the cam lever, it's located underneath the large cam gear, right rear side of the top of the chassis. It drives the arm that moves the cassette tray. The end in the upper left-hand corner will sometimes break off and cause the "bonkers" symptoms you described. The cam lever, p/n# TCE224988 is available at Studio Sound, http://www.iglou.com/studiosound/ for $8.90 along with the gear upgrade kit. Hope this helps.
