Lense focus initialization failure. When power is first applied, the lense micro runs the focus and zoom lenses to their end positions, as detected by photointerrupters. The focus and zoom motors are stepping motors and the focus has been calibrated to move so many steps from the end positions as the zoom is changed to maintain a coarse focus. Fine focus is adjusted through a frequency analysis of the camera video. Some aspect of the initialization or subsequent focus has failed. If the zoom and focus lenses are able to move through their entire range, it is possible that the coarse focus data is corrupt and that it needs to be recalibrated.
