Ok, I got this problem under control.
The remote had dirt on the 'TV" button inside the remote. Cleaned it out
entirely, and seems all you need do is power on the set, then press TV, and
power, and the set powers down on like the 3rd or 4th press. Pressing TV
again stores the code to the remote. Duh !
It does operate the Gemstar feature entirely.
