OK, here we go.

Symptom: This plays for a minute or two, then an interference pattern
creeps accross the red & blue CRT's, and they go dark. As they go dark,
the green CRT gets very bright (no retrace lines).

If I leave it go, then the blue & green go dim, and the red gets bright.

freezing U2001 cures it for a while.

CURE: the 9V Y/V/C VCC is running 11V. The cure was to replace CR3065,
in the base circuit of the 9V regulator. This diode is behind a heat
sink, ad covered with hot glue; a real chore to get to.

I'm real glad to be finally sending this dog home!
