Peter,

The avalanche diode D825 is a critical component. When the regulator shorts, 
the full doubled voltage, 330vdc, from the primary power supply will be 
applied to the smps circuit and that diode clamps the overvoltage by shorting 
intentionally. Also be sure to use the right regulator, it must be an 
STR58041A, it 
has a small dot on the case following the number, no "A". Absolutely no subs 
for it.
