[TechAssist] JVC VM-42WV74 Plasma, jailbars with green,pink straeks

Assisting another shop.
Has jailbars across whole screen with green and pink streaks.
This has a JVC set top box for the tuner and all inputs. One cable goes
down to the display, looks like a VGA plug assy.
I thought he could unplug the cable from the box to the plasma display
and insert a VGA cable with signal to from his sencore HDTV/generator
and "bypass" the JVC box, but the tech says the box is needed to turn
the set on. That's dumb. Would've been a good test to see if the
distortion is box or display. Suggestions?
