Pinch rollers are more than just a pretty face! If they become cone shaped
or barrel shaped they will push the tape up or down causing the tape edge to
get rolled over or chewed up, especially after many passes. This is a common
problem when the owner uses wet cleaning tapes. Tape distortion just before
or just after the pinch roller usually means the pinch roller shape is
distorted.
The ball bearing can develop end play, a ball can crack or get pitted, the
ball race can get a dent. Dirt can get in the bearing. This can cause
tracking problems and flutter. Lots of what appeared to be servo problems on
the older Panasonics were cured by just replacing the pinch roller. I recall
one Sony HiFi with a complaint of audio flutter. Was difficult to even
observe until I made a recording of a 3 KHz tone on another HiFi vcr and
played it on the Sony, watching the audio with a scope. Then you could see
the frequency modulation on the tone. To make a long story shorter, nothing
helped until I got to the pinch roller. I had a lot of the rollers because I
saved them from the expensive broken pinch arm assemblies that resulted when
the black grease turned into glue. Replacing the roller I was surprised to
see that the flutter was worse than before! After going through about 10
rollers I found one that had negligible flutter. The rollers had a bearing
that was much smaller than all other brands and I speculated that the
pressure on the race was therefore higher and that the balls were denting
the race where it faced the capstan. This was inducing longitudinal
vibrations in the tape that got all the way back to the video heads.
I keep a variety of pinch rollers in stock and sub them if there is a chance
they could be involved with a problem, before doing anything else. If that
doesnt change anything I put the old roller back in.
