There is a DC-AC inverter that supplies HV to the bulbs.  I don't know
how to check the bulbs--I think they are fluorescent bulbs.  Measure the
HV coming out of the DC-AC inverter (and going to the bulbs) with a HV
probe.  If there is HV, then you know that one or both bulbs are bad.

It was visible, and I took it all apart and now can see the bulbs at the
top
and bottom. Is there a good way to try and check them?
