Thanks Tom, found the menu and set it to 'Autoselect'. Now the vcr selects
PAL, but with no video--black screen. Anybody have a schematic for this
vcr?

is a setting to auto detect the type of tape being played. You'll have to go
through the menus until you find it, like I did.

that it is playing an NTSC tape, when the tape is recorded in PAL format.
Seems the vcr is not recognizing the PAL encoding on the tape. Thanks.
