it's an old problem, it has been doing it for over a month and that is with driving it to work a couple of times (30 miles 1 way) and driving it to conway for a show (250 round trip). runs great just hear that squeky noise at idle.

it has no side to side play but it does have a bit up and down movement i'd say about as much play as my rockers after being adjusted, just enough to notice.

no sign of wear on the contact points just on the side of the cap. around #2. i haven't started him up in 2 weeks and he fired right up last night though.

the only reason why i suspect it is the distributor is because of the gouge in the side of the cap and you can feel it tapping when you put your hand on that area of the cap when it is running. what else could i be hearing? it is comming from something external because you can't hear it when the decklid is shut but you open the deck lid and can hear something comming from top side and by dwindeling down the areas i keep comming back to the distributor. i have jiggled the fan shroud to make sure it wasn't it, checked tension on the belt, cranked it for a moment with no belt to make sure it wasn't the gennerator (only for like a second guys, not long enough to do damage), regardless of what i do i can hear it and it is comming from top side.

Make sure trhat the dist.shaft doesn't have side play. That can cause a fluction in the point gap plus let the rotor hit the contacts.Wa
Is this a recent occorunce or is it a old problem?

made sure it was pushed down all the way put the cap back on and it is still doing it. will lube it up tomorrow like will said. not my number 1 concern right now, i am trying to mainly focus on the windshield area and the floor right now. i am taking dan's advice and doing everything that needs to be done while i ait is out of commission (no heat and it's cold out)

The cap is on the right way, I assume? You know it has that notch in it. Are you possibly pinching the condensor wire keeping the cap from sitting flush? Are both cap clamps snug? Positive the rotor is seated all the way down?
