you are tooooo funny for you own good sometimes!
yes, I did get the bug running.  actually drove around the pasture
for a about 10 minutes.  that was fun!!!!   got the rims hot enough to give
some idea about the brakes.  3 of 4 four were hot, so one's not working ; )  oh
joy, castle nut and drums that probably are frozen.  ain't I lucky.
it would idle after running for some time.  but really high rpm by it's own
accord.  when i parked it i was able to get to the engine before it died.  not
sure but something was hanging up.  either the carb is sticking (went to the
back to work the carb to keep it running and the lever
wouldn't return freely).  also wondering if the flow channel along the
antideiseling device is clogged since i didn't pull it out and clean that
track.  it would idle sometimes really high and others barely run. pulled the
original carb off the red bus the other night.  i'll rebuild that one and
switch and see if that makes a difference.
also, the spark plugs told tooooo much. 3 and 4: the THEADS were covered with
oil.  NEVER seen that befor, no idea what that means. can guess that rings at
minimum are shot. #3: when i put the new plug in....it seriously bottomed out.
I mean there was not compressing the washer on the plug.  weird... it just
stopped threading in.  that head has got to be bad. should have two good heads
from busther's motor that the glad nut backed out on.  the case may be shot but
the heads should be good. (by the way.....who would want to work on bugs after
busses, there is no room to change plugs, what
 a bummer!)

in the mean time, i'll get some wheel cylinder and a master cylinder. the brake
pedal had no "compressed" feel.  it hit a point and grabbed but it didin't have
and feeling of compressing fluid, just a rock hard braking feel. not pumping
sounds or build up.
I looked at the underside just for grins.  the driver side is a fiberglass pan.
the passenger side needs to be replaced in a timely fashion.
if somebody's got a 914 i want to know. if there's is on the road and mine is
not, i just might get distracted and need to go work on the 914 ; )
Hope you had a good evening.  i had fun driving a beetle around the pasture.
 Thanks.
shirley
