Jeff, the only way I have had any luck with axle nuts is by using the
"beater wrench".
The flat black wrench with a square end on it that you can hit with a BFH
(big f'n hammer).
Those work pretty well, but still difficult not to hit the fat lip on the
fender of later splits.
You might have to order one from somewhere like aircooled.net.  I think
that  is where I got mine...
