The Secretary's action would effectively halt further citizen involvement on ways to address major safety and transportation issues on the corridor. The City has not received any official notification from Prasad, but officials were informed by Tallahassee Democrat newspaper staff that Prasad announced to them on Tuesday that he will deny a recommendation from the City of Tallahassee for Tennessee Street. The Tallahassee City Commission has not voted on or approved any recommendation to be submitted to the Florida Department of Transportation. In fact, in coordination with FDOT, the City was conducting an extensive public involvement process to collect ideas and suggestions on how to address the significant safety concerns -- with 182 pedestrians and cyclists hit by cars in this area in the last nine yearsinvalid unicode 2014 in addition to future traffic concerns for the West Tennessee corridor. The citizen involvement process thus far has included dozens of meetings with area businesses, motorists, Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, Florida State University and others, and two public hearings are planned for later this month to garner additional citizen input. Based on community feedback, the City Commission directed staff to explore alternative proposals to share with the public, including such possibilities as a bus only lane with bike paths on nearby streets, off peak parking that would create a possible barrier between pedestrians and motorists, and other ideas. Tennessee Street is owned and maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation, but also serves as a federal highway, US 90. The City became involved in roadway issues because of the significant safety concerns expressed by the public and Florida State University following a major pedestrian/vehicular accident in October 2007, where a student was injured. The City is also working to address future traffic concerns for the West Tennessee corridor. "Citizen involvement has shaped every road project we've undertaken and we have a philosophy that citizen involvement is critical to good policy making at the local level," said City Commissioner Andrew Gillum, who called for the special meeting. "The City Commission is fully flexible in considering any option that protects pedestrians, moves cars and helps ensure businesses remain viable on West Tennessee Street." The special meeting will be held in the Tallahassee City Commission chambers, 300 S. Adams St., at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. The meeting will also be aired live on WCOT, Comcast channel 13, and streamed live on the City's website, Talgov.com.
