Attendants participated in breakout sessions focused on identifying transportation needs for senior, disabled and low-income citizens in the capital region. They were also updated on state and federal legislation being considered that could affect transportation. "From the summit attendees, we are in the process of developing a coalition focused on improving transportation options for the transportation disadvantaged of this region," said Ivan Maldonado, StarMetro's superintendent of paratransit. "This coalition of transportation professionals, customers and human services agencies will work with StarMetro through our newly selected Mobility Coordinator, Ms. Andrea Rosser, to improve transportation." The new coalition will be made up of transportation stakeholders, human services agencies and transportation users. The goal is to have staff from various area agencies working collaboratively to make the best use of available resources to make effective change. The coalition will meet on a quarterly basis and will provide input on how to improve StarMetro's Human Services Coordination Plan, which is a Federal Transit Administration requirement. The Mobility Coordinator announced at yesterday's summit is a new grant funded position. In it, Rosser will execute a pilot project for United We Guide, a program aimed at increasing transportation mobility among senior, disabled and low-income citizens in the capital region. She will work specifically with those citizens who receive assistance from human services programs. In addition, Rosser will provide travel training to educate citizens on their available transportation options and help them better understand how to navigate existing transportation systems. "Overall, we are very pleased with this year's turnout for the Capital Mobility Summit," Ron Garrison, StarMetro executive director, said. "We are already planning next year's summit and are excited to help build this coalition for people interested in these issues."
