Hey all- I got another interview with Frank last week, and he wrote a nice
overview of our latest foray into providing food access for the residents of
South Providence, this time, residents more furry than any of our members,
even Sir Puleo.
   Check it out, send it on!

   Greetings readers,

We've been nominated for "Best Blog" in the 2011 Providence Phoenix's "Best
of..." poll. While we initially asked for your nomination for best
nonprofit, it appears that the public at large thought that we'd fit better
into the blog category. We're young and hungry. We'll take what we can get. So
cast your vote for us by using the widget on the right, and again, you can
vote more than once, so feel free to cast a vote daily. In other in-house
news, we've begun collecting compostable food scraps from the McAuley House
in Providence. The McAuley House provides meals five days a week to the less
fortunate. Those scraps and the scraps collected at the Wintertime Farmers'
Markets also will be going to the New Urban
Farmers<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6yiej4cab&et=1104613508643&s=682&e=00163BUsn626UVN9VYoxjgE1aw3PI3PIHXLX6gJ2IDtySL0Zuk7S2R6a6gZeS9LKMkBITrHHo8BATsIbeAPxa0I7NPJU5WJkjDHLZjmpFrPPsejhJE5ru7ZeNNGJ3PAx6xC>in

big list of community gardens that still need farmers next week. Thank you

* PROVIDENCE - The first winter for the Fertile Underground's handmade
greenhouse hasn't been without its
challenges.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6yiej4cab&et=1104613508643&s=682&e=00163BUsn626UXzHsaDVJZIKdykU9yP57rEOV9vGzEvwKwhXgXEw5tnbkDstPTTodYJP_nFI_kzxca3274FmFXo0aU3KiY_mvGhao2dY6bin11zsY124ig_jA==>
Steady
snowfall kept members from even getting into the group's fenced communal
garden on Pearl Street for more than a month - never mind making it across
the snow-and-ice-covered lot to the greenhouse. A 10-foot-high chain-linked
fence topped with barbed wire surrounds the West Side community garden, and
the gate opens in, which made it difficult to push open until most of the
snowbank blocking the entrance melted.
*New Technology May Be Able to Reverse Climate
Change<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6yiej4cab&et=1104613508643&s=682&e=00163BUsn626UUQ0eGwt0OKiGX3_YLE04Zc6jwQ9M5K4dbccOzrKeWF-k3cmlRcNMeh1CHJ8yOOXi2oyQUT0hUMWqHPtT2OuLPIfq7HLBVu4AKRYqdiKd7Zl0q071aLmer2Acn4DVhpzq5BRYt8v94JBlLu0GjWlL3omaPNBmvd4evno5xGHH6RLc36CwIW2CGzUAN6FGfUuoAX-MtJ9R2HWskSn7FIlGOdCU2jrxsAa-c=>
* * *Through new technology that propelled the Industrial Revolution, we've
burned more fossil fuels and pumped more greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere in the past century than at any time during Earth's history - and
have inadvertently altered the climate as a result.

So, what if we could change the climate on purpose? Use technology to once
again alter the climate, but this time in a way that is deliberate and would
offset the current negative impacts of climate change, such as increased
global surface temperature, sea level rise and maybe even ocean
acidification?
  *What's the Story with Food
Miles?<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6yiej4cab&et=1104613508643&s=682&e=00163BUsn626UWKnCMIeu9LwoBNMRMYWVkW4LcRvwQy7xOhSry4zwwmigqo6xe5FNEUcFxd2Ya4zbhMLbn3Qd5mW_OmigVLX9A7ahaIgK6QBop6V2ulTi2T6afsqRIWRp8pWqbnLwCc4i1cY6XbrKzD1QzWh1pYvfgwqhMqTDRwTkIgXh024Q4dNBLTTsTRW7CpOHQY-4qjDtU=>
* We've all heard that the average supermarket food item has traveled more
than 1,500 miles from its source. Those food miles represent petroleum used
by airplanes, trucks and refrigerators, and the argument runs: The distance
and speed the item has come = the carbon that was burned to get it here =
the damage to our planet from climate change. This is plausible as far as it
goes. But others point out that the energy used in transportation isn't the
whole story.
 *Letting Your Car Idle Warms More than the
Engine<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=6yiej4cab&et=1104613508643&s=682&e=00163BUsn626UVE1oGxZLH5buIZMSvB6cpfJxHHNUNgoNuaUKnBsuXr5XDZgnWPmQeP344AaoGiXmGNQnA5QbaT0I2Exd8vXwZ-uhvwVYR-0gGnUdAUk-2AAhS1R6nzz6GBpcfJi-eA1BN23pkKWDQOLhzstJJP2mai1zkN1-_Go1lwQUgsbu8Ca7LIt30rNyu_7zCVKYJo1DC5WUrRW667AQ==>

During the cold winter months, many drivers succumb to the long-standing
practice of pre-starting their cars before driving. However, studies reveal
that the need to "warm up" a car is a myth, and in reality harms not only
your car's engine, but also is bad for your wallet, your health and the
environment.
